Adi Shankaracharya

An eighth-century philosopher and monk, Shankara systematized Advaita Vedanta, which teaches the identity of the self with the absolute (Brahman) and the illusory nature of the world (maya), founded monasteries across India and reorganized Hinduism in the face of Buddhism.
