John D. Rockefeller

Founder of Standard Oil, he built the largest industrial monopoly in American history until its breakup by the Supreme Court in 1911. A devout, teetotal Baptist, he became the greatest philanthropist of his era, founding the University of Chicago and the Rockefeller Foundation.
