Baron of Mauá

Industrialist and banker of the Brazilian Empire, Mauá founded a shipyard, a foundry, Brazil's first railway and banks across the River Plate; a liberal critic of slavery, he clashed with the government's restrictive credit policy and went bankrupt in 1875.
