India's first great empire, the Maurya unified almost the whole subcontinent under Chandragupta, Bindusara and Ashoka, with centralized bureaucracy, espionage, a standing army and the Arthashastra, until Ashoka embraced Buddhism and nonviolence after Kalinga.
